We’re used to energy being found underground – that’s where we get fossil fuels from.
While renewable energy is usually above the ground, the wind and the sun. Here’s some underground renewable energy. It doesn’t need digging up, though it does need some drilling to reach. That’s the key part. Geothermal Energy has a lot to offer in principle, it’s not just clean and endless and right under our feet – it doesn’t just run base load (the holy grail of the fossil fuel heads) it can run constantly…
The idea that really excites me is this – take an old fossil burning power station and convert it to run on Geothermal, aka Underground Energy. These old power stations have all the infrastructure in place, the turbines and transformers and power lines… it makes great sense to simply power them with a different heat source.
As we ramp down our use of fossil fuels for Energy, we can convert these old power stations, give them a second life and create a base load of renewable energy for the 21st Century Grid. It’s entirely feasible, the key to this new source of energy is drilling technology (the cost of reaching the right depth) the rest we already have.
