Giga Poll explodes the far-right myth of "Broken Britain"

September 28, 2025

We’ve been sold a lie. According to the far right, Britain’s a country at war with itself; divided by race, culture, and ideology. But here’s the thing: it’s just not true. The Giga Poll, the biggest survey of its kind with over 45,000 people taking part shows the real picture. And you can see it all for yourself at gigapoll.co.uk.

What it shows is a Britain that’s more tolerant, more united, more open-minded than the hate-fuelled rhetoric would have you believe. People aren’t tearing each other apart over culture wars, they’re worried about real issues: the cost-of-living crisis, the NHS, jobs, housing, and the climate emergency.

I wanted to know what Britain really thinks. That’s why I commissioned this Giga Poll. Our findings show we’re being told fairy tales by the right about the country we live in, about our fellow citizens, our neighbours and friends and what they care about.

I hope the views and attitudes expressed through this massive poll - will help shape the future of our country.  It needs to start with government, they have the levers of power - and they need to start by listening.

A Britain that works together

The poll, carried out by HOPE not hate and backed by the TUC, looked at over 80 issues; social, political and economic. And the results are clear.

  • 66% of people say they live in peaceful, friendly communities. Just 11% disagreed. So much for the “divided Britain” story.

  • 80% enjoy mixing with people of different backgrounds, ethnicities and religions. That’s multicultural Britain working, despite what the culture warriors say.

  • Cost of living is by far the biggest concern (56%), with the NHS next at 38%. Immigration and asylum - supposedly the number one issue according to the right - actually ranks fourth, at 25%.

And here’s the kicker: most people want action on climate. Two out of three Brits believe climate change is caused by human activity, and they know it threatens their families’ futures. Half the country supports Net Zero by 2050, but they want the government to make the economic case, not just the moral one. And they want polluters to pay.

Nearly 80% say big business should cover the cost of the environmental damage they cause. 75% back a wealth tax because they see what’s happening: the rich getting richer while the rest are left behind.

The disconnect: Britain vs politics

Here’s where it gets messy. The poll shows that while people are progressive, politicians are lagging far behind.

  • Labour is actually trailing Reform UK by six points in this survey.

  • 66% of people feel ignored by politicians.

  • Nearly 70% want new ways to make decisions; citizens’ assemblies, online platforms, because the old way isn’t working.

This isn’t apathy. It’s anger. People want change, they just don’t trust the system to deliver it.

Economic pain and political failure

The cost-of-living crisis runs deep. 40% fear their financial situation will worsen in the next year. One in ten are already skipping meals or missing rent. That’s Britain today, while ministers argue over culture wars.

People want solutions that match the scale of the problem:

  • Sick pay from day one.

  • An end to fire-and-rehire.

  • Real living wages.

  • Protection for zero-hours workers.

All of these are hugely popular - yet our government pretends the public want something else.

Polluters beware

One of the strongest messages in the data is this: people are sick of being ripped off and poisoned by privatised utilities. Water companies came out as the most hated, with almost half the country demanding urgent regulation to stop the sewage scandal and clean up our rivers.

That’s not left or right, it’s just common sense. Nobody wants raw shit pumped into the rivers we swim in, fish in, and drink from. Except, apparently, the private water companies.

The experts agree

Nick Lowles, Chief Executive of HOPE not hate , said:

“The Giga Poll is the most important piece of polling that has been conducted for many years… Against the backdrop of growing anti-immigrant rhetoric and the largest far right demonstration in British history, this poll clearly shows that the bulk of British people are far more positive about the country than the media discourse states.”

Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the TUC, said:

“Strengthening employment rights isn’t just the right thing to do - it’s hugely popular with the British public. Making work pay is the kind of real, tangible change people are crying out for.”

What next?

The Giga Poll is a reality check. The people of Britain are ahead of their politicians. They’re more tolerant, more ambitious for real change, more willing to embrace solutions on climate, the economy and social justice.

But right now, they’re being ignored. And that’s dangerous because when people feel ignored, the door opens to extremists and populists who claim to speak for them.

This poll gives us something new: a route map for change, based on what people actually think. And it’s not more of the same, it’s systemic change, rooted in fairness, sustainability and inclusion.

So, here’s the message to government: stop listening to lobbyists and start listening to the people you serve. The answers are right here, in black and white, at gigapoll.co.uk.

Britain isn’t broken. The people aren’t divided. But they are demanding change. And this time, they mean it.
