Britain’s live music scene is going green. Properly green. Thanks to a new deal between green Ecotricity and AEG Europe, some of the biggest venues in the country, from The O2 in London to The Halls Wolverhampton, are now powered entirely by renewable energy. You can read the full story over on TriplePundit.
Here’s the thing… live events bring people together like nothing else. Football, gigs, festivals, they’re shared experiences that cut across background, belief, and politics. And that makes them the perfect platform to show what the green transition actually looks like in practice. That’s what we’re doing with Grid Faeries, working alongside A Greener Future, bringing clean energy right to the heart of live entertainment.
We proved once again it could work this summer at London’s LIDO Festival in Victoria Park, the UK’s first large-scale festival gig powered entirely by battery storage instead of diesel. No fumes, no noise, just clean power and music. Massive Attack headlined the show, and even the sound engineers said the bass was cleaner. That’s a proper win-win, for the planet and for the crowd.
Now, AEG’s partnership with Ecotricity takes this idea indoors, powering legendary venues with electricity from British wind, sun and water. Each venue’s power use is matched hour-by-hour with the output of real traceable clean energy.
This matters because visibility matters. When tens of thousands of fans visit The O2, the Watford Colosseum in Hertfordshire, The Halls Wolverhampton in the West Midlands or many others and realise the lights, sound, and beer pumps are all running on renewables it normalises the shift we need across society. It makes people think, “If a massive arena can do it, why can’t I?”
The truth is, we can. Grid Faeries might be built for live music venues, but the idea behind it goes much further. It shows how collective effort and imagination can power everything; not just gigs, but our homes, our workplaces, our whole way of life; without fossil fuels or compromise. The green revolution doesn’t have to be hidden away or hard to reach. It can be loud, bright and full of life… just like the music.
We’ve got a long road ahead to decarbonise the way we live, but the path’s getting clearer every day. The gigs are electric. Literally…:)
