Breaking the Gas Grip: How We Can Finally Cut Energy Bills for Good

October 27, 2025

Our energy market is broken

Right now, electricity prices in Britain are tied to the cost of gas. It doesn’t matter how much cheap wind or solar power we make — the market still lets the most expensive gas-fired plant set the price for everyone. It’s outdated, unfair and costing us billions.

Every time the global gas market jumps, our bills follow. It’s like buying local veg and paying supermarket prices — all because the system says so.

Time to break the link

We’ve built a plan to change that. It’s called Breaking the Link — a practical, evidence-based framework to decouple electricity prices from gas once and for all.

We worked with two independent experts, Cornwall Insight and Engage Consulting, to test and map the reform. Their findings show it’s not just possible — it’s doable within two years.

Cornwall Insight focused on the policy and market design, laying out what government, Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator need to do. Engage Consulting tackled the technical side — the codes, rules and system updates that turn reform from a slogan into reality.

What happens when we do this

When we break the link, we break our dependence on global gas volatility. Our energy bills stop being dictated by war, speculation or fossil fuel greed. Instead, prices will reflect the true, stable cost of home-grown green power.

And the numbers add up. Modelling across every scenario — even the wild ones — shows huge potential savings for consumers. Lower bills, more stability, and an end to gas-driven price spikes.

The system’s rigged for fossils

Let’s be honest — the current setup works just fine for fossil fuel companies. The higher gas prices go, the more they profit, and the more we pay. That’s why nothing changes. Fourteen years of Tory energy policy have protected the oil and gas lobby while households have paid the price.

We’ve had enough. It’s time to put people and the planet before fossil profits.

A clear roadmap for change

This reform doesn’t need another decade of debate. It needs leadership. The experts have shown the route — legislative tweaks, updated market codes, and a coordinated rollout between DESNZ, Ofgem and the grid operators.

In other words: the hard work’s been done. Government just needs to say yes.

Let’s get on with it

Breaking the link between gas and electricity prices is the simplest, fastest way to cut bills and accelerate the shift to renewables. It’s common sense — and long overdue.

We’ve proven it can be done. Now it’s over to those in power to make it happen. Let’s break the gas grip, stabilise prices, and build a fairer, greener energy future…:)

Breaking The Link

We’re generating record amounts of cheap, clean energy, but still paying gas prices because of a broken market. Switching to a pay-as-bid system would cut bills, boost energy security, and finally reflect the true cost of renewables. It’s the only real fix. Break the link, lower bills, and back Britain’s green energy for real… let’s get on with it.
